Web Design tips

When starting your website design whether you’re a designer or a client getting your site built by someone, there are a few things to consider. Of course you’ve got your ideas about how your business should look on the web and the designer will have theirs based on their experiences with the web and with your industry. Here are some topics to think about:

Design: When designing you want to think about the customers that will look at your site, think of how they will perceive your company’s image. Colors can effect people in many ways, you may love your yellow, but most people will think its hideous on the web. So a good idea there is to have people that are not part of the project that can give a non-bias opinion on the site look through it for you. Sometimes another’s opinion can totally change the site design for the better. Look for simple fonts like arial or verdana for example to use as your text, it usually looks pretty professional on any site, just look around.

Code: The way you code your site can make a huge difference in how many people actually ever see it on the web. Writing valid, clean code from the beginning is really important if you want it to be seen on Google, Yahoo, MSN and other engines. Using the correct doc types on the site can also make a big difference when engines go through your site. A good tip on this is simply to write it clean and valid the first time before it ever goes online, its easier to add to a good site than try to clean up a bad one.

Search Engine Optimization: As was said above about search engines you need to start with clean code to help you with your SEO strategies. Optimizing your site is more than clean code though, you need to think about the right kind of titles and tags, keywords for the site and how each page will be worded. It can be good to think of each page as its own site and use words in the tags, titles and headers of your page that all correspond with the content on the page. Now these are just a few things but they are big when getting started.

Content: “Content is King” many like to say. Its true the content on your site is very important. putting just the right amount of content of a page or site can be a great thing for its search ability. Sometimes overloading a site with way too much content, duplicate or not enough can hinder purpose of the site. If you’ve got a small ten page site that is loaded with good content, but not too much of it you can be in good shape, it never has to be huge, just great content.
